A Surgical Technologist’s Story
Precision in Every Procedure
At TMH, going above and beyond for our patients is second nature to our team—especially when facing complex situations. Here’s a real-life example featuring one of our dedicated surgical technologists:
Elizabeth Bethea

Certified Surgical Technologist

Elizabeth’s healthcare career began when she flipped on the show Grey’s Anatomy. Like many viewers, the show inspired Elizabeth to work in the Operating Room. She wanted to scrub in, assist surgeons and be a part of the action. To do that, she thought she needed a nursing degree. Her guidance counselor recommended she become a Surgical Technologist instead. “From watching the show, I thought Surgical Technologists were nurses.”

Elizabeth attended Southern Regional Technical College and graduated with her Associates of Applied Science in their Surgical Technology program. She applied to TMH after seeing the state-of-the-art Mustian Center open, “I knew TMH was expanding their surgical services which would allow me opportunities I wouldn’t experience somewhere else.”

In September of 2019, Elizabeth finally stepped into the OR. “Grey’s Anatomy is nothing like the OR, but I still love the show.”

Elizabeth is a Tallahassee local, born at TMH. She declares, “I have no plan of leaving.” Why? She says, “The OR is FUN! It’s a completely different atmosphere and there are big personalities. You build relationships with physicians and colleagues that you consider family.”
